Location of studies (in Hungarian): Department of Vehicle Elements and Vehicle-Structure Analysis
Abbreviation of location of studies: JSZT

Description of the research topic:

Background:
These days the automated manual transmissions (AMT) become more and more popular in Europe. During the gearshift, the engagement of the gears is realized by a synchromesh system, whose core is a spline clutch. The shiftability of a spline clutch depends on many properties of the gearbox and the actuating system. Three main subsystems must be studied in details: the gear system in the gearbox, the actuating system and the transmission of the power from the gearbox to the wheels.
Study of the shifting mechanism has been started at the department 10 years ago. PhD thesis and MSc diplomas have been realized on synchromesh behavior and spline clutch shiftability.

Goal of the research:
Study of the shiftability of a spline clutch at high rpm difference. Finding a relationship on the wear of spline edges and the shiftability. Understanding the edge wear mechanism. Finding actuator settings to minimize it.

Work to be done:
Survey of the scientific literature: 1 year
Numerical model building: 1 year
Design of experimental setup: 0,5 year
Measurements, study and discussion of the results 1 year
Writing the thesis: 0,5 year

Expected scientific results:
New model for edge wear. Parameters for shifting actuator avoiding too intense wear, or to handle wear during lifetime.
