Description of the research topic:

Insulin resistance is a state in which a given concentration of insulin produces a less-than-expected biological effect. This syndrome affects 24% of adults aged greater than 20 years and makes up a broad clinical spectrum, which includes obesity, diabetes and contributes to fertility problems, maternal and foetal complications and in 6% of pregnancies the life-threatening condition of gestational diabetes. Progesterone hormone can promote insulin resistance in normal condition in pregnancy as well as in pathological circumstances through its progesterone receptor (PR). Smoothelin-like 1 protein is a unique and selective inhibitor of PR activity that regulates the gene expression of metabolic enzymes and the elements of insulin signalling. Our goal is to describe the role of SMTNL1 in insulin action in skeletal muscle and in the endometrium. We also aim to generate a peptide mimicking the action of SMTNL1 on PR. This interaction would attenuate the effect of progesterone resulting in the activation of insulin signalling and the uptake of the glucose from the blood stream to lower the blood glucose level.
