Description of the research topic:

There are a number of optimization and simulation problem in the field of logistics. The
simulation, validation, and optimization of pipeline transportation are especially important.
This field has a great emphasis in the oil industry. Various products and semi-products are to
be transported in such a way that several conditions are to be held. The most important is the
availability ofthe product at the source at the beginning of the transport. Similarly, the storage
capacity has to be also available at the ending of the transport.
Solution methods, modeling techniques has to be developed for this field and they have
to be compared to compared to methods available at the scientific literature! It must be
explored what kind of modeling and simulation tools are available! Novel models and/or
customized simulation engine have to be developed!
The introduced engineering problem leads to such an IT problem which necessitates the
design and implementation of an effective simulation engine. The speed is important, thus a
custom application should be developed in C++ and C# languages. The GLPK framework can
be used for the optimization tasks, together with the GLPSOL and CPLEX solvers.
