Description of the research topic:

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), such as Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), is a chronic disease, characterized by inflammation and ulceration of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The incidence of IBD is increasing with aging, furthermore, newly evidence proved that UC could be apprehensible as a disease of premature aging of the colon. Aging is associated with an increase in oxidative stress, a decrease in gut motility and an increase in the activation of inflammosome pathways. Inflammosomes are molecular platforms assembled in response to harmul stimuli, and they regulate the activation of proinflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-18) and enzymes (caspase 1). The exact role of inflammosomes in IBD is still unknown, but it is suggested that enhanced inflammosome activation and IL-1β production is associated with colitis. Our aim is to contribute to the better understanding of this disease pathogenesis and to find relevant diagnostic markers and therapeutic targets to unburden this serious health problem.
