Description of the research topic:
The classical view on human learning treated memories as formed during studying, and testing as an assessment of the efficiency of studying. However, it is a groundbreaking insight that testing can attenuate forgetting (Karpicke and Roediger, 2008). The long-term advantage of retrieval over study has been replicated with a wide range of materials and in situations where transfer of learning to different contexts was necessary (Roediger and Butler, 2011). Despite these striking findings that underlie the crucial role of retrieval in knowledge acquisition, the mainstream educational practice is still overwhelmed with learning techniques based on some kind of studying of materials to be learned (Dunlosky et al., 2013). The general aim of this research project is to investigate functional and neuronal background of retrieval-enhanced and learning.
