Description of the research topic:

Guard cells, beside their main function (maintaining and regulation of the gas exchange and transpiration) are very important in sensing the microorganisms, and also in selecting the possible pathogens. During plant-microbe interactions, following the successful recognition of a pathogen, the first step in the line of defense is the closing of stomata. The recognition of pathogens occurs on the recognition of different molecular patterns (PAMP, MAMP, DAMP). Following the activation of pattern recognition receptors, immediate (closing of stomata) and delayed processes (e.g. expression of PR genes) could be observed. While the early processes are mainly based on calcium oscillations, generation of reactive oxygen- and nitrogen species, whereas the delayed responses are based on the role of different plant hormones (salicylic acid, jasmonate, ethylene, abscisic acid, auxins). In development of successful defense strategy, the concentration, the timing of the appearance and the resulting interactions of the hormones play an important role. In addition, the regulatory role of light on guard cells is also very important, so following the different MAMP/PAMP/DAMP treatments, studying of rapid and slow responses in light and also in dark should be examined.
