Description of the research topic:

HIV integrase (IN) is the enzyme responsible for the integration of the virus genome into the host cell's chromosomes, and, as such, it is a significant target for preventing HIV infection. The currently available IN-inhibitors have the drawback that they disturb the normal immune response of the treated patients, due to the IN's structural and functional similarities to the RAG1 protein responsible for the assembly of the antigen receptors of lymphocytes. The current PhD topic aims to develop specific, natural HIV IN inhibitors that do not disturb the somatic recombination of RAG. High-throughput FRET screening will be performed on herbal extracts, followed by bioactivity-guided isolation in order to identify the HIV IN-inhibitor constituents. The lead compounds are also going to be studied on immune cell-based models. The work involves intensive international collaboration, hence good English language skills are a must.
