Károly Osvay
Generation, characterization, and application of laser-driven ion sources

THESIS TOPIC PROPOSAL

Institute: University of Szeged
physics
Doctoral School of Physics

Thesis supervisor: Károly Osvay
Location of studies (in Hungarian): ELI-ALPS
Abbreviation of location of studies: ELI

Description of the research topic:

The ELI-ALPS facility will use powerful lasers to drive diverse secondary
photon and particle sources, which sources will be made available to the
scientific public as a user facility. For proton and ion sources,
specifically, two main application areas have been identified, radiobiological
studies and materials science investigation. This PhD work will focus on the
generation, characterization and application of laser-driven proton and ion
sources. Initially, the students are expected to participate in experiments at
various laser facilities in the investigation of ion acceleration schemes, the
development laser targets for high-power high repetition-rate applications,
developing diagnostics techniques in characterizing the proton beam, and
different applications in materials science. This would be supplemented by
computational studies of ion sources and beam diagnostic methods, and
post-processing of experimental results. During the second part of the
research, the students are expected to participate in the implementation and installation of the particle accelerator beamlines at ELI-ALPS, particularly the PW ion accelerator beamline.
