Description of the research topic:
Detailed description of the research:
a) Background:
Autonomous vehicles that are currently under development and testing are soon to be introduced to public roads. In the coming decades automation of road transport vehicles shows great potential but will totally transform the mobility habits of our days. These vehicles will form a special class of vehicles in the traffic composition, and their effect on traffic flow is a topic worthy of research.
b) Goal of research:
The goal of the research is twofold. First, complex analysis of the impact of autonomous vehicles on traffic flow. Second, research of possible traffic control algorithms with focus on intelligent transport systems.
Develop realistic traffic flow models which can capture the effect of autonomous vehicles and suitable for modern control applications.
Research of advanced modeling, control and estimation methods are also needed. Apply the learned techniques in the field of traffic modeling, autonomous vehicles and public transport (e.g. V2I/V2V technology, platooning, signalized intersection control).
c) Main tasks of research:
• State-of-the-art research.
• Traffic modeling theory.
• Urban road traffic modeling and simulation.
• Traffic measurement and estimation.
• General research about autonomous road traffic.
• Analysis of the impact of autonomous road vehicles.
• Development of advanced modeling and control for road traffic
consisting autonomous vehicles.
• Testing and validation of the developed models an algorithms.
e) Minimum expected scientific results:
• two articles in refereed international journal with SCI index,
• three articles in international conference proceedings.
