Description of the research topic:

Chronic renal failure (CRF) is a complex clinical syndrome which incidence is continuously rising in the industrialised countries. Complex metabolic changes develop due to the decline of kidney functions leading to numerous complications and mild to severe metabolic alterations up to end-stage renal insufficiency causing uremia. It is well known that CRF patients have an increased risk of developing cardiovascular diseases which are the leading causes of mortality among them. Major pathologies of the aforementioned cardiovascular diseases are left ventricular hypertrophy, fibrosis, heart failure and ischemic heart disease. A number of studies have demonstrated that the endogenous stress adaptation of the myocardium (e.g. ischemic preconditioning) is lost in metabolic diseases e.g. hypercholesterolemia. However, the cardioprotective effect of ischemic conditioning techniques are preserved in CKD, even if uraemia is associated with diverse metabolic changes, such as hypercholesterolemia. Our aim is to investigate the underlying molecular mechanisms of uremic cardiomyopathy and the cardioprotective mechanisms of ischemic conditioning strategies in CKD.
