Description of the research topic:
The last centuries have witnessed considerable landscape changes in Europe. Natural habitats experienced severe changes in the 20th century as well. In Hungary, landscape changes were significantly affected by the extremely intensive agricultural use during the communist era. The remnants of natural vegetation can survive both in secondary and man-made habitats. The role of the PhD student is to examine how species composition and diversity pattern differ between secondary habitats and semi-natural habitats, to reveal how semi-natural and secondary habitats can be distinguished using different plant traits and to assess the role of secondary habitats in maintaining plant diversity in lowland landscapes dominated by agricultural areas.
