helyszín (magyar oldal): BME Department of Energy Engineering
helyszín rövidítés: EGR

A kutatási téma leírása:

a.) Preliminaries:

The integration of Hungary's waste management in the loop of the circular economy is a priority goal by waste-to-energy (WtE) utilization of the high heating value and biodegradable fractions of municipal solid waste. In the National Energy Strategy, the energy potential of RDF and SRF, as well as the biodegradable fractions, is counted on in the replacement of lignite-based power generation with low-carbon intensity power generation; in the area of district heating development; and the field of second-generation biofuels that can be produced from biodegradable waste. Applying circular economy principles could offer a solution to decrease the amount of MSW and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

b.) Aim of research:

The aim of this research is applying the life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology to achieve carbon neutrality on waste to energy utilization of municipal solid, agricultural and forestry waste of Hungary; and integrate in the loop of the circular economy with a combination of suitable technologies that achieve the most favorable environmental performance through mitigation of climate change and other environmental impacts.

c.) Tasks, main items, necessary time:

The research work starts with a traditional bibliography literature review on circular economy, waste management and LCA methods. Then EU Circular Economy action will be overviewed including waste management in Hungary and in EU; Circularity; and EU goals. Potential waste to be used in the research and the possible treatment technologies will be overviewed then the suitable technologies will be selected. (1 year). After that environmental analysis and LCA method screening will be defined: LCA goal and scope definition, overview and definitions about the energy scenarios (1 year). LCA inventory analysis (LCI) and Impact assessment (LCIA) of the scenarios, circular economy insertion on the LCA results (1 year). Continuous publication of the results will be performed. Writing the PhD thesis and repetition of experiments if needed will be carried out during the last year (1 year).

d.) Required equipment:

LCA will be carried out in EASETECH and openLCA and/or Sphera LCA for Experts (GaBi) software environment with Ecoinvent or Professional databases, which must be purchased/renewed.

e.) Expected scientific results:

The above-mentioned scenarios are subjects of publication since relatively few data are available in this research topic. The main outputs of this research will be LCA inventory about the waste to energy (WtE) utilisaiont of Hungarian wastes a roll of possible solutions to apply the circular economy in the context of waste management.
