A kutatási téma leírása:

a.) Preliminaries

Composite metal foams (CMFs) belong to the metal matrix composite materials group. CMFs are well-known for their high specific load-bearing capacity (in compression), their high energy absorption capacity, and their low density. Due to their listed advantageous properties, the transportation and defense industries are the most inquiring sectors. The researches on CMFs started in 1997 at the Department and the Supervisor has been interested in the topic since 2003. The Supervisor is the leader of the MTA-BME Momentum ‘Lendület’ High-performance Composite Metal Foams Research Group.

b.) Aim of research

CMFs have reached their limits in the conventional reinforcing methods; therefore new, more innovative approaches are needed to further enhance the load-bearing and the energy absorption. The main aim of the research is to increase the load-bearing and energy absorption capacity of the CMFS in given spatial directions by 50 and 40%, respectively.

c.) Tasks, main items, necessary time:

Literature review about CMF systems, finding the aims, and setting up a research plan (1 semester). Mapping the non-conventional methods to increase the load-bearing and energy absorption capacity, with a special focus on the possibilities connected to specified spatial directions (1 semester). Production of CMFs with various reinforcements, experimental, preparation of samples (2 semesters). Numerical modelling of the produced and investigated CMFs, comparing the results to the experiments (2 semesters). Development of specific part proposal(s) for transportation and / or defense industries (1 semester). Summarizing all the results and thesis writing (1 semester).

d.) Required equipment:

Infiltration chamber, quasi-static and dynamic materials testers (tensile testing machine). Optical and scanning electron microscopes with energy dispersive spectrometry. Linear and nonlinear finite element software (MARC). Computer workstation.

e.) Expected scientific results:

Novel CMFs with enhanced load-bearing and energy absorption capacity. Know-how for the successful production of reinforced CMFs. Widening the application possibilities for the transportation and defense sectors.
