The technological and economic progress achieved by the 21st century has brought a high level of comfort and convenience to the middle and upper classes of a global society. However, this has demanded sacrifices in terms of social justice, poverty, inequality, and social-environmental sustainability.
In the theory of human development (capability approach of Amartya Sen and Martha Nussbaum) development is about the freedom of every human being and the expansion of choices (capabilities) to realize the full potential of every human life. Development focuses on people's well- being and agency - with the participation of all social groups and individuals – and on the possibility of living a life that a person has reason to value.
Within the present research topic, doctoral students can examine in a theoretical or a practice- oriented way the human development theory and its subtopics: poverty, power inequality between genders and social groups, autonomy and paternalism, community engagement. The topic provides a broad room regarding research design: Qualitative, participatory, and community-based research methods, as well as alternative ones, such as arts-based research methods.
