"Quantum computing has the potential to radically transform a wide variety of industries. While the technology has reached the proof-of-concept stage, scalability challenges prevent building large-scale and reliable quantum computers. Current material-based techniques rely on approaches in which quantum characteristics of a few qualified materials such as spins in silicon, nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond, or trapped ions are being harnessed by sophisticated manipulation and read-out tools. The state-of-the-art superconducting qubits are short-lived and require ultra-cold temperatures, while trapped ions are extremely hard to control at scale. By contrast, the current project will develop an all-organic qubit system that can be controlled with light, yielding precisely engineered single-site properties.
The role of the PhD candidate will be to deliver reliable characterisation of magneto-optical properties of molecular qubits, which are based on a specific group of organic radicals. To this end, ground- and excited-state properties, which determine the quality of the qubits, will be computed by means of density functional theory and post-Hartree-Fock methods. The PhD candidate will also work on how the chemical environment affects the spin-coherence time of molecular qubits, using the spin-dynamics simulations. The computational results will guide experimental realisation of the most promising materials. The active collaborations with experimental groups and industrial partners across Europe are foreseen. Overall, the project will contribute to a new generation of quantum materials, whose mutual interactions can be switched ‘on’ or ‘off’ on demand.
