A kutatási téma leírása:
The chimpanzee, humans’ closest evolutionary relative, inhabits a range of habitats from rainforest to savanna in tropical areas of Africa. Their numbers are decreasing, and the major anthropogenic threats are poaching, diseases and decreasing habitat size/increasing habitat fragmentation due to deforestation. Chimpanzees live in communities varying in size and when females reach reproductive age, they often migrate from their natal community to join another community nearby. Chimpanzees have the most prolific cultural repertoire of any non-human species, ranging across multiple domains of behaviour, including foraging, communication and self-care. In this project, our goal is to utilize modelling to understand how new cultural variants emerge, spread and are maintained in populations using the limited amount of direct observations of cultural spread through the transfer of females between communities.
