A kutatási téma leírása:

Remote sensing of plant functioning has major importance in geoscientific research and has been used by increasing number of applications in agriculture in the last decades. Rapid advances in sensor technology allow deeper insight into plant functioning and even the photosynthetic process could be sensed from the space. Crops are exposed to many adverse environmental stress factors, which can injure the photosynthetic apparatus, resulting in a decreased plant productivity and overall yield. Therefore, photosynthetic measurements are important components of plant stress studies. Leaf-scale fluorescence measurements have been extensively used for quantifying the efficiency of photosynthesis in plants and for stress detection. However, the traditional fluorescence and gas exchange measurements are either manual, labor-intensive and give low spatial representativeness, or are automated, but need large infrastructure. These drawbacks could be solved by remote sensing, but surface reflectance typically used in remote sensing applications reflects only delayed responses to variations in environmental conditions since most indices reflect pigment composition changes.

Recent studies indicate that fluorescence measurements in combination with CO2 gas exchange measurements may provide unique tool to improve global agricultural productivity models, improving the reliability of crop yield projections under climate change scenarios. The candidate will observe and analyze canopy fluorescence and reflectance in normal and stressed plants under field and lab conditions and compare the results to SCOPE model fluorescence output. Combination of studies of fluorescence and carbon cycling together with modelling approach could provide new insights into the controlling factors of crop production and may allow us to prepare for using satellite derived fluorescence data.
