A large number of patients, with a broad spectrum of illnesses, are admitted to the emergency department on a daily basis. One one hand, acute illnesses need to be identified as soon as possible and sometimes even trivial symptoms may be forerunners of severe diseases. Viral infections are typical examples beacuse they often cause mild symtoms but can also be the sources of severe illnesses. On the other hand, a large proportion of the patients presenting to the emergency department have noncommunicable diseases. Cancer is the second leading cause of death in many developed countries, including Hungary. The treatment of cancer diseases presents a considerable challenge for the health care system in general, and for emergency care in particular. Cancer patients have been shown to present more frequently to emergency departments than patients without cancer. The PhD topic provides the opportunity for more than one relevant research topic to be studied in depth. By investigating the frequency of admission and the clinical characteristics of patients presenting to the emergency department, specific risk groups and predictors of hospital admission can be identified.
