A kutatási téma leírása:

a.) Antecedents:

The recycling of polymers has long been a focus of research. It is particularly true for polymers with cross-linked structures, where recycling in the material by remelting is not feasible. Among the cross-linked polymers, the recycling of elastomers is now a key issue, as the European Union has set a target of recycling 95% of the materials used in cars. One proven way of doing this is to grind elastomers and use them in new rubber compounds or thermoplastic matrices. Compatibility is of great importance in these areas. According to the literature, ionizing radiation can positively affect this, as it can form active groups on the surface of the particles.

b.) Aim of the research:

Creating polyolefin blends containing irradiated ground tire rubber, exploring their properties, and explaining the resulting properties at the structural level.

c.) Tasks, main items, necessary time:

• Literature review. Literature review of the effects of ionizing radiation on the properties of elastomers and mixtures containing elastomers (approx. 12 months).
• Production of polyolefin blends containing irradiated rubber granules. Study of the effects of irradiation on the produced mixtures, with particular reference to mechanical properties and compatibility (approx. 20 months)
• Exploration of the morphology of the mixtures produced, with particular reference to the interaction between the recycled elastomer and the matrix material. Formulation of structural explanations based on the results (approx. 16 months).

d.) Required equipment:

The necessary technological, material testing, and measuring equipment for the research work is available in the accredited laboratory of the Department of Polymer Engineering, and the University of Applied Sciences Dresden will carry out the irradiation.

e.) Expected scientific results:

Development of a new technological process for the recycling of elastomers. Enhancement of inter-phase compatibility by the use of ionizing radiation.
