This project is designed to gain a clearer understanding of fish nutrition and insect rearing. Currently, fish meal (FM) and fish oil (FO) are the most expensive and principal ingredients in fish feed, and due to climatic and market changes have significantly increased their price. This issue poses a challenge to fish farming, limiting profitability in fisheries. Insects are a sustainable alternative source of protein with a low ecological footprint and are suitable to replace partially FM. Its composition depends on the life stage, rearing conditions, and death status. Furthermore, insects have a good amino acids profile, fat contents, vitamins, and minerals as well. It is crucial to look for alternative protein and lipid sources that allow aquaculture to remain commercially and environmentally sustainable.
The project has three main phases: Rearing of mealworm (Tenebrio mollitor), determination of the insect digestibility in wels catfish (Silurus glanis), and the evaluation of the effect of the insect meal in zootechnical parameters in European Catfish (Silurus glanis) rearing.
