A kutatási téma leírása:

In recent years, the excessive blooms of harmful algae, cyanobacteria among them is an increasingly frequent phenomenon. Cyanobacteria have been at the center of many different researches due to their worldwide spread and ability to produce a wide range of bioactive compounds, which could affect not just the aquatic organisms but terrestrial ecosystems as well.
Cylindrospermopsin (CYN) is produced by a number of filamentous cyanobacteria from the orders Nostocales and Oscillatoriales. Very little information is available on the effects of CYN on cyanobacteria and eukaryotic algae. The few available data related to eukaryotic algae and cyanobacteria show that CYN could inhibit growth and metabolic processes; the effective concentrations depend on the target species. Despite the very intensive research, literature barely can be found about the possible effect of cyanotoxins on life cycle changes of eukaryotic algae.
Among the freshwater green algal species, H. pluvialis is currently the most studied cyst-forming species, as cyst formation is common under natural conditions and can be easily induced also under laboratory circumstances. Based on the literature data, it can be suggested, that the responses of the different strains on different environmental stresses are similar: within different time frames and with different extent, but there were cyst formation and metabolite accumulation induction in the case of all different strains. This suggest, that H. pluvialis could be an excellent model organism for studying life cycle changes caused by different environmental factors, may providing generally interpretable knowledge for freshwater and aeroterrestrial algae with the ability of resting stage formation.
Based on existing knowledge, it could be assumed that cyanotoxins, as environmental stress factors, induce life cycle changes: formation of resting stages and accumulation of storage materials. Within the planned project, not just the effects of treatment with CYN containing cyanobacterial extracts, but the relationship and interaction between the cyanobacterium A. ovalisporum and the green alga H. pluvialis will be tested. The project provides new results about the toxicology of one of the most relevant cyanotoxins, the alkaloid cylindrospermopsin on the life cycle changes of an algal model organisms. New data will be gained about the possible effects of the cyanotoxin on the life cycle and storage accumulation of cyst forming algae. The model organisms representing very variable ecology provides the possibility of comprehensive interpretation of the gained data. The results of the project will be useful both from ecological and economical point of view, taking into consideration the biotechnological importance of the model algae.
