A kutatási téma leírása:

Scientific background
Environmental awareness has a growing significance in the everyday life of current society. Besides, the strict governmental and international regulations, the industrial players in the vehicle production also aim to reduce the environmental footprint of the automotive as much as possible. For this reason, numerous studies are devoted to the reduction of component weight by replacing heavy metallic parts using lightweight plastic products instead. As a result of research, development and innovation, in the contemporary vehicles, a high number of components are already being fabricated of polymeric materials. Considering the expectations regarding their mechanical and other properties, these polymers are mostly modified, reinforced with a secondary phase. When the reinforcement incorporated into the polymer is of natural origin, then it is referred to as a biocomposite, which is a group of materials that draws great scientific interest lately. The reason for this is that compared to common synthetic reinforcements the natural fibers and particles are available abundantly, they have a much smaller density and they are also biodegradable. Agricultural by-products (straws, husks, etc.) is a specific group of natural fibers that is mostly used for energetic purposes (burning) currently. There is a great potential of decreasing their environmental footprints by using them as reinforcement in polymeric materials instead. The hypothesis of the research is that using the proper polymer/agricultural by-product combinations such composites can be achieved that fulfil those strict criteria that are present in the vehicle industry in order to replace currently applied plastic and metallic parts, thereby reducing the environmental footstep of automotive production.
Aim of the proposed research
The aim of the proposed research is the valorization of agricultural by-products as reinforcement/filler materials for thermoplastic polymer based composites. Considering environmental awareness, mostly bio-based and biodegradable plastics would be used as matrices. The by-products to be used would be plant-based fibers generated in large quantities through local agricultural activities (wheat-, oilseed- and barley straw, etc.). The outcome of the research would be materials with proper strength/stiffness/toughness for vehicle industry purposes prepared by melt compounding of the components. In order to achieve this goal, various coupling agents and/or surface modification of the fibers would be performed.
Tasks to perform
• Literature review: Analyzing the current state of the science regarding the natural fiber reinforced polymer composites, especially the ones used in the vehicle industry.
• Material development: Analyzing the effect of agricultural by-products of various sources on the mechanical, morphological, thermal properties of the polymer matrix.
• Analyzing the applicability of the developed biocomposites for vehicle components, especially for interior parts of automotive.
