A kutatási téma leírása:

Neutron generation with lasers takes places in a two (or three) step procedure. First, charged particles, like electrons or ions, are accelerated with laser pulse. In case of electrons, the >10MeV energy electrons hit a high Z material, where a strong gamma beam is generated which creates neutrons, mostly in the same high Z material. In case of ion acceleration, the >1MeV ions hit a low Z material, where generate neutrons via one of the fusion mechanisms, like Be(p,n), Li(p,n) or D(d,n).
The yield and the properties of the generated neutron beam depends strongly on the interaction, the target (single or multiple), and, ultimately, the spectra and the charge of the accelerated particles. The maximisation of the neutron yield, hence, requires a multi-dimensional optimisation, including the properties of the laser pulse, like spectral phase, temporal shape, spatial contrast, and prepulses. The challenge is even higher when laser pulses as short as 10 fs are used.
One of the research topics is the optimisation of the ion and subsequently the neutron yield of laser-based interactions, with the use of machine learning algorithms. The other research area is the application of the laser-generated particles in computer tomography (CT) and biomedicine.
The scientific work is to be conducted within the National Laser-Initiated Laboratory (NLTL) of the University of Szeged, Hungary, at two locations. The basics of laser acceleration, including laser properties, and the first optimisation algorithms would be studied in the Tewati Laboratory of the Physics Institute, run by NLTL. This is also the venue of the optimisation and run of CT devices with laser-generated particles and radiation. The major experimental campaigns, including biomedical applications, would take place on the purpose-developed beamline in ELI-ALPS, developed and run by NLTL.
