A kutatási téma leírása:

The substructure stiffness of the railway lines play an important role regarding the internal forces in the rails, sleepers and crest zone of the embankment. Excessive stresses in any of these components can result in permanent deformations of the track. The problem is especially pronounced in locations where the track encounters additional lanes or junctions. These abrupt changes occur in the support system as well and lead to significant problems in rail, sleeper and ballast performance. Other typical problem zones are locations where the open lines run onto bridges or into tunnels, as well as transition zones as well as track above culverts and drainage tunnels. Examples prove that inadequate technical solutions can generate damage that may require long term speed restrictions or lead to short maintenance cycles and a significant increase in total cost of ownership.

The objective of the thesis will be to investigate several contributing factors that lead to reduced track performance. Among them may be subgrade material properties, ballast dimensions, sleeper and rail selection and spacing.
The scope of study may include laboratory and field evaluations, as well as performance monitoring of test rail sections. As practical solutions, analytical and empirical relations will also be explored.
