A kutatási téma leírása:

Modern water management planning and environmental protection need overall information about the hydrophysical soil properties (HSP), such as soil water retention (SWR) curve or hydraulic conductivity (HC). The interrelation between HSP, pore network, structural characteristics and degradation processes is quite complex and not yet completely understood. Therefore, research towards describing these relations, in order to quantify the impact of soil degradation processes on soil water management has become increasingly relevant and important. In the proposed research:
1. Distinct stages of a selected degradation process (drying-wetting cycles) will be simulated on artificial soil columns made from selected aggregated samples that are well representative of main Hungarian soil types;
2. The HSP (SWR and HC function) of the soil columns will be continuously detected after various treatments;
3. Diverse physical, chemical and mineralogical analyzes featuring state-of-the-art measurement technology will be performed on original soil samples and on samples from decomposed soil columns.
The results of the research will make possible to establish more exact interrelationships between the quantity and quality of soil-forming components, soil structure and pore size distribution (in connection with HSP) of soils allowing
• to characterize the soil physical effects of selected degradation processes and
• to draw practical conclusions on conservation soil structure to promote sustainable water management.
In the past years in an ongoing project (K 119475) we improved our methodology for measuring the soil aggregate stability], which has been successfully tested by soil additives (e.g. in a biochar pot experiment). As part of the same project we explored and described approx. 60 representative soil profiles, collected and analysed approx. 250 soil samples, and built a so-called ‘Hungarian soil structural database’. This database contains different structural information and can be used, among other things, to describe the linkages between soil structure and other soil properties; to develop improved pedotransfer functions containing SST parameters and providing more suitable estimation methods for water management and pollutant transport models.
During the research of recent years, we have repeatedly dealt with the effects of various soil degradation processes on HSP. For example, in connection with red mud contamination of soils; NAPL pollution; surfactants; soil physical effect of soil organic carbon , irrigation and salinization or climate change . Effects of various adsorption processes on the charge and electro kinetic potential of colloidal particles, on their dispersion-flocculation behaviour and consequently on soil microstructural stability were also investigated.
