Maintaining of ecosystem function and services (eg. clean water, irrigation, etc.) is today’s primary and urgent task, as we are witnes of the global degradation of ecosystems and the rapid decline of biodiversity due to the anthropogenic activities and climate change. In aquatic ecosystems, primary producers are the base of all ecosystem function, they influence ecosystem recovery through their response to disturbance events (natural or human induced). The main aim of present study is to investigate the resilience and resistance of benthic diatoms and phytoplankton communities using different methods (e.g. trait-based and tarditional species-based approaches) in order to assess ecosystem vulnerability to lossess of ecosystem functions under different disturbance regimes. Furthermore, during the present study, there are possibilities to examine the role of the rare and non-native species in the ecosystem stability and vulnerability. The results are presumed to be essential for the management of waters and for decision makers, since they provide more accurate prediction of the ecosystems function and enhance the explained variance in a community by the environmental variables.
