A kutatási téma leírása:

To understand the nature of the orientational and positional ordering of anisotropic particles is still in the forefront of the scientific interest. Several types of anisotropic colloidal nanoparticles can be synthesized, where the shape of the particles can be rod-like, plate-like and even biaxial. It is even possible to create monodisperse and bidisperse suspensions. Such nanoparticle systems can exhibit isotropic, nematic and smectic phases with increasing concentration if the nanoparticle is enough anisotropic. It is also possible to place non-spherical particles into very narrow pores, where the positional and orientation freedom of the particles is reduced in some extent. Our purpose is to construct model systems and perform theoretical calculation, which allow us to get some insight into the elusive phase behaviour of colloidal nanoparticles in different confinements such as the slit-like and the cylindrical pores.

The PhD student should examine the phase behaviour of some nanoparticle systems in both two- and three dimensions to study the local orientational and positional order and the possible phase transitions between different phases. The effect of out-of-plane orientational and positional freedoms should be studied by placing the particles into nano-sized pores, which allows us to find the link between the phase transitions of 2D and 3D systems. To do this some density functional theories and simulation methods should be applied. The main goal is to examine the adsorption properties, layering phenomenon and ordering phase transitions in nano-size sandwich panels and in nano-channels. It is also important to propose a sensor or an optical switch application of the confined nanorods (nanoplates).
