A kutatási téma leírása:

Car manufacturing is facing with serious challenges: the ever increasing environmental protection requirements together with lower harmful emissions, increased comfort but lower consumption, increased safety and legal requirements. Some of these requirements even are in contradiction, but we can state that to achieve these requirements reducing the weight of automobiles has significant importance.
Therefore, lightweight manufacturing is an important target in car manufacturing. Lightweight production is strongly linked to lightweight construction principles. There are two main trends for producing lightweight automotive structures with low cost manufacturing which are particularly valid for car body elements production by sheet metal forming. Application of high strength steels is one of the possibilities. The application of lightweight materials – particularly various aluminium alloys – is regarded as the other possible solution.
Application of high strength steels can be regarded as the latest developments in steel materials including various grades of newly developed high strength steel materials, e.g. DP- steels, TRIP-steels, and various kinds of Advanced High Strength Steels (AHSS) including Ultra High Strength (UHSS) and Extra High Strength (XHSS) steels, as well as recently developed boron alloyed manganese steels (like 22MnB5, etc.). Increasing strength however usually leads to lower formability and requires new innovative forming processes.
The other main trend is the application of lightweight metallic alloys. Aluminium alloys have special significance in lightweight manufacturing of car body elements with forming processes. However, aluminium has lower formability compared to steel. Applying aluminium instead of steel materials requires new innovative forming processes, too, to overcome the difficulties caused by the lower formability.
On the basis of the aforementioned facts there are two main objectives in this research field: the first one is the research of the application of high strength steels, the other is the application and development of formability and forming processes to produce low cost manufacturing processes for car body elements investigating their formability issues and developing new innovative forming processes.
These research topics are supported by the international research cooperation of the Institute together with other European countries within a H-2020 research project providing good infrastructural and financial background for the research work.
