Soil microbial communities represent the greatest reservoir of biological diversity known in the world, with thousands to tens of thousands of microbial species found a single gram of soil. The MTA-EKE Lendület Environmental Microbiome Research Group study the spatial and temporal dynamics in the composition and functionality of soil and plant microbiomes associated with grapevine (Vitis vinifera) and surrounding semi-natural habitats. Grapevine microbiome studies have only focused on grapevine plant parts and rhizosphere, while the role of semi-natural ecosystems in the compositional and functional dynamics of microbiomes associated with viticulture is unknown. This research project will focus on the ecosystem-level spatial and seasonal dynamics of composition and functionality of microbial communities in a wide range of habitats and microhabitats and their correlation with microclimate, grapevine cultivar, management practices and edaphic conditions.
