There is a lack of knowledge about the essential oil bearing plants of Africa. However, the endemic diversity of the local flora is important. There is a continuous demand for new medicinal plant species as source of new biological active compounds. There is also a continuous need to improve the quality of the plant material which is almost impossible if the plant material is collected from the wild. That is why the introduction, cultivation trials of those species is important.
In the frame of the PhD study a group of candidate species for cultivation under the circumstances of Central Europe will be included. The botanical, ecological characteristics and active substances will be investigated. The goal is to detect and define their intraspecific diversity, ecological reactions and production biological features in order to start a practical introduction activity. In Central Europe the main limitation factor of the cultivation seems to be the lack of natural precipitation. That is why, it is also important to test how the drought influences the production and secondary metabolite content if the investigated medicinal plants.
The investigations take place in climatic chambers, in open field plots and in phytochemical laboratory. The work includes maintenance of plantation, evaluating their growth and development, sampling and sample preparation, taking part in laboratory investigations and preparing contributions. A good botanical and biochemical knowledge at MSc level and an advanced English knowledge is recommended.
