In flowering plants, development of gametes and pollination are the major reproduction steps towards the production of seeds. Successful pollination, coordinated between the pollen and stigma, is essential to maximize seed set. It should in this context be emphasized the importance that the development of the male and female gametes, the fusion of the gametes and the development of the embryo and endosperm are accomplished undisturbed.
Drought and heat stress are the two major environmental factors limiting plant growth and yield via molecular, biochemical and physiological perturbations. Though these factors normally act in concert, the impacts of water limitation and elevated temperature have usually been studied independently. Despite unfavourable climatic changes in many grainlands, where unpredictably hot and dry weather extremes happen more and more frequently during reproductive development, the interaction between these two significant stressors have received far too little attention.
The main objective of the study is a complex characterization of the effect of simultaneous drought and heat stress during reproductive development in barley, with emphasis on changes in the phenology, morphology and molecular events. The whole phenomenon will be studied by an integrated approach comprising cytology, histology, biochemistry, physiology, transcriptome sequencing and bioinformatics. We expect that the transcriptome of vegetative and reproductive organs of barley will reveal novel players of cellular metabolism in response to drought and heat co-stress.
