A kutatási téma leírása:

Description of the research topic:
Globally, alcohol use is a leading risk factor of morbidity and mortality. The disease burden associated with alcohol consumption is the greatest in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). Although the volume of alcohol consumed in the CEE countries is considerable, this alone cannot explain the high rates of alcohol-related morbidity and mortality. Epidemiological studies have suggested that besides ethanol other constituents of alcoholic beverages could also play a role in the development of diseases attributable to alcohol intake. Some of these components are known to be toxic and carcinogenic such as acetaldehyde, and ethyl carbamate. Their concentration can be especially high in spirits that are popular drinks in the CEE countries. Therefore, it is important to ascertain the health risks associated with their consumption. The aim of this PhD project is to estimate human exposure to acetaldehyde and ethyl carbamate from spirits consumed by the population of CEE countries and develop models for quantitative health risk assessment. The expected results can provide valuable information for evidence based decision making in alcohol policy in the CEE countries.
