A kutatási téma leírása:

Fish are generally one of the main sources of food for humans and provide numerous nutritional benefits. However, fish may contain environmental contaminants such as heavy metals.
Nowadays the heavy metal pollution of aquatic ecosystems is a burning issue all over the world, mainly due to toxicity, long persistence, bioaccumulation and biomagnification in the food web of these elements. Since trace elements can be accumulated in living organisms in different concentrations and their bioavailability is not equal, systematic monitoring of the concentrations of pollutants in the organisms to predict the environmental risks should have a priority.
Fish have become the major vertebrate model in ecotoxicology, as they are excellent indicators of heavy metal pollution. The fish living in polluted waters can uptake various amounts of trace elements by several routes i.e. skin, gills or digestive system by feeding. Fishes are one of the most diverse groups of aquatic ecosystems with different type of diet; they occupy different trophic levels of the aquatic food web and they can accumulate trace elements in a wide concentration range. Metal accumulation in fishes depends on the chemical properties of the elements and on different factors such as ecological needs, physiological state, size and age of individuals, their life cycle, life history and feeding habits. In the other hand, diet of a fish species can alter considerably during the life-span, pattern of accumulated trace elements can be also different among different age groups of the same species.
