A kutatási téma leírása:

Increasing demand for transmission capacity in the optical backbone and access networks as well as in data centers induce the advent of novel multiplexing schemes together with utilizing advanced modulation formats. Beyond the widely used wavelength, time and polarization division multiplexing schemes, space division multiplexing using multicore optical fibers is a potential candidate to suit the requirements of high transmission capacity together with high spectral efficiency. Moreover, additional benefits, such as improved nonlinear tolerance for long distance transmission and increased noise tolerance have already been demonstrated.
Despite the significant progress of the field, the capabilities of this novel multiplexing scheme are far from being explored. The aims of the present research involve both the discovery and development of applicable modulation techniques on the transmitter side and the proper way of signal processing on the receiver side utilizing a DSP.
The topic is initiated with strong collaboration with the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), Tokyo, Japan, which is one of the world-class research institutes of optical telecommunication. In case of successful work and progress, the candidate may have the potential to spend several months in the institute to improve his/her skills as a researcher.
Open problems and research goals:

The Ph.D. Candidate choosing this topic should:

- Discover and further develop novel transmission and detection techniques in a multicore optical fiber, such as high dimensional modulation formats, spatial superchannels and self-homodyne detection. Both theoretical and experimental investigation is necessary.
- Build and optimize proper signal processing algorithms for the developed transmission methods
- Implement the built algorithms into DSP on the receiver side
- Design and build realistic optical networking laboratory experiments to show the applicability of the developed novel transmission and detection techniques

Research partner:
- National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), Photonic Network Research Institute, Photonic Network System Laboratory, Japan

előírt nyelvtudás: angol
további elvárások:
- solid background in optical networking and/or physical optics and/or electrodynamics AND telecommunications theory
- experience in computer programming
- willingness to DSP programming
- willingness to build experimental setups in fib
