A kutatási téma leírása:

a.) Antecedents: High performance composites are stiff and strong but they suffer from sudden, brittle failure with insufficient warning before final failure. Pseudo-ductile hybrid composites addressed this issue by providing a metal-like stress-strain response with pseudo-yielding and a flat plateau before further rise. These features enable early detection of accumulating damage and act as warning signs well before final failure, making the operation of components made of pseudo-ductile hybrid composites safer than that of their non-hybrid counterparts. Visual indication of the overload in the hybrids can be exploited for damage sensing (UK patent application submitted). There is further potential to increase the performance of the pseudo-ductile hybrids by optimising their structure especially focusing on the layer interfaces.
b.) Aim of research: To enhance the mechanical properties and explore the potential additional functions of hybrid composites such as self-monitoring and self-healing.
c.) Tasks, main items, necessary time:
• Literature review in the field of pseudo-ductile and multi-functional composites (approx. 12 month).
• To enhance the performance of current unidirectional pseudo-ductile hybrids by modifying the layer interfaces (approx. 12 month).
• To develop damage sensing fibre-hybrid composites using transparent glass plies (approx. 12 month).
• To establish the self-healing potential of pseudo-ductile hybrid composites (approx. 12 month).
d.) Required equipment: The necessary equipment is available at the laboratory of the Department.
e.) Expected scientific results: New materials with enhanced properties and added functionalities. Deep understanding of the factors affecting the functional properties of pseudo-ductile hybrid composites.
