A kutatási téma leírása:

a.) Antecedents in the field on counter-current separation processes:
- PhD theses under French-Hungarian joint supervision (1998, 2012, 2013), Hungarian PhD theses (2005, 2009)
- Industrial applications (Sanofi-Chinoin, Gedeon Richter, Egis, Palota Kv. Kft.).
- Research projects funded by the Hungarian Scientific Research Funds (OTKA): 6 projects between 1995 and 2013, one ongoing (K-120083, 2016-2019).
- 37 publications in prestigious international journals, a book chapter of 157 pages on the modelling of counter-current separation processes (including absorption and stripping) and a chapter in a book about carbon capture and storage

b.) Aim of the research:
One of the most important task to protect our environment is to reduce the CO2 emission of power plants. Currently the most promising method is to absorb CO2 in different absorbent liquids and then to recover it by stripping (carbon capture and sequestration). The aim of the research is to study how the energy efficiency of such systems can be increased, by computational modelling and optimization. Carbon capture systems are designed for Hungarian and foreign power plants.

c.) Tasks, main items, necessary time:
• Study of the previously collected literature (4 months)
• Review of new literature (4 months)
• Getting acquainted with the available programs (4 months)
• Model validation and calculations for different absorbents (12 months)
• Calculations for different configurations (rich split, split flow, bottom flash, interstage cooling) (6 months)
• Optimization (12 months)
• Writing of the thesis (6 months)

d.) Necessary equipment and software:
Professional flow-sheet simulators (ChemCAD, Aspen Plus available) and in-house software (partially available, partially to be developed or improved).
e.) Expected scientific results:
• Development of new methods and new applications of existing ones.
• Publications in prestigious international journals.
