A kutatási téma leírása:

a.)Antecedents: Water distribution systems (WDSs) are highly vulnerable due to the number of people they serve and their geographic span. To prevent the degradation of water quality inside the pipeline system, the usual approach is adding chlorine at various entry points to control (suppress) the growth of pathogens. The chlorine then spreads over the network by convection and ideally at every point of the system there will be sufficient chlorine present to block the growth of pathogens. However, as chlorine reacts with organic and inorganic matter in water, the chlorine concentration decreases in time called the chlorine decay. Real-life networks with complex topology require the development of computer tools allowing the prediction of hydraulic and chemical properties at each point of the network.
b.) Aim of research: The aim of this research is to develop analytical and numerical techniques that allow the prediction of chlorine concentration in large-scale looped hydraulic networks.
c.) Tasks, main items, necessary time:
• Literature survey, 1 semester.
• Hydraulic modeling, chlorine transport and kinetics, 1 semester.
• Implementation of chlorine transport and kinetics model in the software, 1 semester.
• Initial laboratory measurements, 1 semester.
• Validation of the simulation framework on real-life systems, 1 semester.
• Development of response strategies, 1 semester
• (Continuous) publication activity, thesis writing, additional 2 semester.
d.) Required equipment: personal computer, laboratory, access to Waterwork Companies.
e.) Expected scientific results: The research is expected to provide design tools (analytical and/or computer simulation framework) for chlorine modeling and response strategies.
