A kutatási téma leírása:

The interest in fillers and reinforcements dispersed in nanometer dimensions in polymers has been considerable in the last few decades. The basic idea is that the large specific surface area of such fillers generate enormous interfaces which results in new properties. Unfortunately most of the nanocomposites prepared failed to fulfill the expectation, because layered silicates could not be sufficiently exfoliated or spherical fillers aggregated thus the expected large surfaces were not achieved. This led to further efforts and attempts to try new fillers, like carbon nanotubes, graphene, halloysite, etc. Because of the small size of the particles and the large interfaces, the control of interfacial interactions is critical in the development of nanocomposites with acceptable properties. The goal of our research is the study and modification of these interactions. The surface of layered silicates is modified with various surfactants and coupling agents, and the structure and properties of the resulting composites are determined. Besides the flat surface of the silicate layers also their edges are modified to determine the role of functional groups located there. Besides layered silicates, halloysite nanotubes are also used as reinforcements in polymers. Interactions are changed by surface modification and the tubes are filled with active molecules to use them as carriers and control release supports for various substances.
