High precision tests of the Standard Model as well as efforts to discover New Physics demand the precise knowledge of the luminosity characterising the size of the data set under study. At hadron colliders, like the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN this is one of the dominant sources of experimental systematic uncertainty. Moreover in certain cases such as in the precision measurements of vector boson production, it is the most important contribution. Luminosity measurement thus plays a central role at LHC and the improvement of its precision is essential for the entire precision physics programme. As the beam intensity of the LHC increases, it is necessary to upgrade the existing Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector including its luminosity detector system. The PhD student will join the international effort at CERN within the MTA-ELTE Lendület (Momentum) Particle and Nuclear Physics Group to design and build innovative luminosity detectors based on semiconductor technology to be used in LHC Run3 (2020-2022) and High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC, 2025-2035). Using the data to be collected in Run3 starting in 2020, they will participate in the commissioning and calibration of the detector, improve the measurement techniques and ultimately measure the luminosity of the collected data. They will also contribute to a precision measurement of the CMS experiment to test the Standard Model of particle physics.
