Modeling gas-solid fluidized beds of energy industrial relevance

TÉMAKIÍRÁS

Intézmény: Budapesti Műszaki és Gazdaságtudományi Egyetem
gépészeti tudományok
Pattantyús-Ábrahám Géza Gépészeti Tudományok Doktori Iskola

témavezető: Szentannai Pál
helyszín (magyar oldal): Department of Energy Engineering
helyszín rövidítés: EGR

A kutatási téma leírása:

a) Antecedents: Fluidized beds offer several advantages over traditional energy generation methods from solid fuels, notably low NOX emission, in-process capture of SO2 and the ability to efficiently burn a wide range of low-grade, unequal quality, and potentially problematic fuels (including waste and biomass), as well as mixed fuels.
b.) Aim of research: To describe the behavior of active and passive particles in the fluidized bed. The main modeling activities include experimental, theoretical, and numerical elements. The experimental part includes own experiments together with gathering and evaluating the published experimental results. The topics to investigate include both hydrodynamical and thermodynamical descriptions of the bed, but the description of the chemical reactions would cover another topic. Not all possible parameter values should be investigated; the industrially relevant parameter ranges must be focused.
c.) Tasks, main items, necessary time: Studying the theoretical and numerical pathways of describing the particle behaviors in fluidized beds (1 year). Summarizing, evaluating, and integrating the methods for describing the mixing/segregation of active particles in fluidized beds (1 year). Modeling the heat transfer phenomena in the fluidized beds (0.5 year). Setting up and carrying out experiments for verifying those points of the own model, which cannot be verified by experiments carried out and published by others (1 year). Publication of the new scientific results (continuously). Writing the Ph.D. thesis (1 year). Attending some relevant courses (in English) on combustion theory, fluid dynamics, and energy engineering. Most of the mentioned tasks can be carried out in parallel.
d.) Required equipment: Computer, access to the scientific literature, and all the necessary laboratory equipment are readily available at the department.
e.) Expected scientific results: A new, more general semi-empirical model for describing the behavior of both bed particles and active particles in the fluidized bed.
