A kutatási téma leírása:

Topological defects - points, lines or walls - might appear in an orientationally ordered medium spontaneously or might be produced by controlled methods. The last includes application of fields and specially designed surfaces with solids, liquids or gases. The complex geometrical confinement of anisotropic fluids by micro and nanoscaled cavities or channels with carefully designed surface treatment on their inner side is one of the possible methods. The inverse situation is also interesting, when solid objects or colloids are imbedded into the fluid, then defects will be created at the interface. Even the free surface (air-liquid crystal interface) acts as a source of topological defects. The study of these complex orientational fields in liquid crystals provides a novel direction for developing new optical, photonics, rheological, topological and microfluidic materials.
