A kutatási téma leírása:

All-optical signal processing means manipulation of modulated optical signals solely in the optical domain without conversion to and from the electronic domain. This approach makes possible to utilize physical phenomena on the femtosecond timescale occurring in specified optical materials, allowing fast, low-cost, low-consumption and compact devices for optical signal processing. Such devices have the potential to operate in ultra-fast future optical fiber communication systems, with functions involving all-optical phase and amplitude regeneration, frequency conversion, multicasting, optical logic gating, ultra-low noise amplification, etc.
It has already been proven that nonlinear optical materials including specified optical fibers and crystals are physically suitable to build such devices. However, their intrinsic physical phenomena and applicability to operate in future high speed optical networks is far not resolved, which makes them one of the main stream research areas of optical telecommunication today.
The topic is initiated with strong collaboration with the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), Tokyo, Japan, which is one of the world-class research institutes of optical telecommunication. In case of successful work and progress, the candidate may have the potential to spend several months in the institute to improve his/her skills as a researcher.

Open problems and research goals:

The Ph.D. Candidate choosing this topic should:

- Choose the appropriate nonlinear optical devices for novel networking requirements: high number of wavelength channels, novel modulation formats, novel multiplexing schemes
- Investigate theoretically and experimentally the operation of nonlinear optical devices in novel and practical optical networking setups
- Develop and upgrade mathematical models for the physical operation of the used devices
- Implement the developed models as efficient algorithms
- Design and build realistic optical networking laboratory experiments to show the applicability of the novel signal processing schemes

Research partner:
- National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), Photonic Network Research Institute, Photonic Network System Laboratory, Japan

előírt nyelvtudás: angol
további elvárások:
- solid background in optical networking and/or physical optics and/or electrodynamics
- experience in computer programming
- willingness to build experimental setups in fiber optic laboratories
