A kutatási téma leírása:
Large river floodplains are of vital importance for humanity since ancient times, as places for agriculture, settlements, transport, etc., especially since water regulations. As a consequence they are among the most anthropogenic landscapes worldwide. Their biodiversity, outstandingly high originally, has decreased immensely. Wetland habitats are among the most endangered ones. Conservation of natural values of floodplains are a priority in Europe and also in Hungary. As passive conservation often insufficient, many wetland rehabilitation and reconstruction project are being implemented, whose planning and evaluation demands an integrated geographical-biological approach. Floodplains are dynamic systems; in case of management interventions, effects of inherent natural processes, as sedimentation or succession, have to be also taken into account. Natural dynamics can be revealed by historical studies on the timescale of decades or centuries. Floodplains, even regulated ones, host rich ecological networks, which are excellent objects for landscape ecological modeling.
