A kutatási téma leírása:

Justification of the research topic
Record rainfall and river levels have led to widespread floods affecting large regions and human settlements worldwide. In the light of the severity of recent events, and the risk that these or similar events will occur again, it is appropriate to reconsider our approaches to assessing flood risk, to planning flood management and prevention and to making our communities as resilient as possible. Flood management does not only include traditional structural measures, but non-structural measures as well, which include e.g. giving constricted rivers more room by setting back levees, reducing floodplain development and giving equal weight to environmental and economic factors in making management decisions. However, this implies a sound and well-planned preparation. Models to assess flood management measures need substantiation with comprehensive data collection for calibration and vaidation, that can include remote sensed and directly measured field data. In flood prediction and rainfall-runoff computation, physically based hydro-dynamic and distributed hydrological models have become a feasible approach recently. What the quality of a flood model depends on are the empirical ingredients, like elevation data. In addition, the prediction of peak flow and the simulation of flood hydrographs in a stream is a very complex process, because the hydrological variables vary both in space and time. A flood model greatly depends on information on river-gauge data and historical flow information and statistical characteristics of these as well.

Objectives
To gain new knowledge in relation to the importance of empirical substantiation of digital flood modeling and related data collection methodologies
To develop new approaches in flood risk management for less researched river basins and to suggest methods to improve resilience
To further develop hydraulic and mathematical-statistical methods of the analysis of flood-related datasets.

Research methods
Field/remote sensed data collection for flood modeling
Flood frequency analysis (hydrological statistics)
Flood mapping, flood risk mapping (GIS)
Open channel hydraulics / unsteady flow
1D and 2D hydro-dynamic modeling
Floodplain modeling
Study of sediment transport/deposition processes
Rainfall-runoff modeling including calibration, for design flood estimation
Extreme flood estimation, including Probable Maximum Floods
Real time flood forecasting
