Smart City - Smart Transportation: analysis and modelling in system and process oriented approach in order to increase the efficiency and sustainability
a) Antecedents:
Organization and influence of mobility demands, decisions (e.g. mode and route choice) and passenger transportation can be improved significantly by application of advanced ICT. In this way the effectiveness, sustainability and quality of transportation are to be increased by ‘soft measures’. The key challenge: optimization of resources with consideration to expectations of participants. Research of this theme is going on at the Department for several years. It can be extended in several new/emerging directions based on the results achieved so far; and the impacts of practical solutions are to be assessed.
b) Aim of research:
Revealing of (sub)systems and processes of smart city (smart transportation) and their interactions. This analytical approach facilitates the identification of cost elements, information management properties and the improvement/optimization opportunities too. In this complex and dynamic system all modes of transportation and all roles/behavioural aspects of travellers are to be investigated with special regards to interchanges. Based on results of analyses new operational methods and models of mobility management are to be elaborated and their effects are to be calculated. Assignment of mobility demands and capacities by smart measures, whereas information is the key medium for coordination. Assessment of value of information in the entire travel chain from several points of view (traveller, operator, society, etc.).
c) Tasks to be performed, their main elements, time requirement:
1. year • revealing of components of smart city (smart transportation) and their connections (structural modelling)
• revealing/analysis of processes and their logical/temporal interactions (operational modelling)
• identification of problems/areas of improvement/development
• identification and comparison of best practices and their background in the reference countries
2. year • revealing and analysis of the regional factors (e.g.: in South America, Central Europe)
• identification of data sources (measurements, surveys, etc.), application of data mining methods in order to reveal the correlations
• elaboration of new general methods/models regarding decisions and/or operations (travellers, operators, etc.) in order to achieve better quality with less investments
• adaptation and application of the methods/models for several regions (cities) considering the differences and similarities (multicriteria analysis)
3. year • refinement of methods/models, calibration, validation, verification
• synthesis of theoretical and practical knowledge/experience
• preparation of dissertation
d) Required equipments:
Computer laboratory and all software of department are available for research purposes.
e) Expected scientific results:
Development and improvement of analysis, planning, operation and decision-making methods in smart city (smart transportation) subsystems focusing on potentials of ICT; extension with theoretical and practical knowledge.
2 papers in the journals with Impact Factor that are registered in Web of Science database
2 conference papers published in international conference proceedings
f) Literature: scientific papers in the following topics: data mining, database management, support of decision-making, travel analysis, economic analysis, ITS systems, analysis of travellers’ behaviour, artificial intelligence, etc.
