Having work and being able to work are considered important requirements for being a full member of society. Work is an essential part of life and inability to work has a negative impact on health and quality of life.
However, working capacity evaluation is not an essential part of either routine medical assessment or medical education. Medical teaching focuses only on the pathomechanism and acute management of different diseases, the role rehabilitation (after an acute illness) and the ways of returning to work are usually neglected.
Beyond the evaluation of physical impairment, functional limitations are measured by a wide range of different methods from standardized questionnaires to software-based evaluations. An ideal evaluation contains physical examination, psychological tests and cardiovascular risk assessment. Despite of extensive research of the topic there is still no evidence based evaluation method.
The aim of our program is to develop the scientific standards of functional capacity evaluation and to transform it into routine daily practice. Included main topics are (but not limited to) cardiovascular risk assessment, burnout, the holistic approach of chronic pain and work addictions (mainly internet addiction).
