The epidemic of obesity is one of Europe’s most serious public health challenges: more than half of the adults are overweight or obese. If the current trend continues, by 2022, more children and adolescents will be obese than moderately or severely malnourished. As a result of obesity, the amount and composition of adipokines and cytokines released from perivascular adipose tissue change, which is associated with endothelial injury and a decrease in endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation. Obesity leads to metabolic disorders that may play a central role in the development of insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and increased vascular resistance. Finding neurohormonal mechanisms of abnormal body weight regulation underlying obesity is key to identifying new therapeutic targets. Our question is whether the metabolic and concomitant endothelial impairments due to obesity can be repaired or reversed.
