Description of the research topic:

The aim of the project is to employ native and in vitro reconstituted model photosynthetic membranes in order to determine the factors responsible for controlling the flow of energy from light-harvesting complexes to photochemical reaction centres in natural photosynthesis. The work will specifically adress how interactions of light-harvesting complexes with other membrane components (lipids, carotenoids, ions and other protein complexes) affect the kinetics of excitation energy transfer, dissipation, and photochemical conversion. Several analytical methods will be applied to probe structural and functional parameters of the investigated systems, with a priority on time-resolved optical spectroscopy. Our group works in collaboration with labs in Hungary and around the world, providing opportunities to learn a range of modern biochemical and biophysical techniques. Applicants should hold MSc degree in physics, biophysics, biochemistry, or molecular biology. Knowledge in one or more of the following areas is highly advantageous: photosynthesis, biochemistry, laser spectroscopy, computer programming, mathematical modeling.
