Description of the research topic:
There is increasing evidence that environmental agents can exert marked effects on the outcome of in utero development and even mediate long-lasting (partly epigenetic alteration-related) health consequences. The primary goal of our study is an investigation of the impact of an improper maternal lifestyle on the developing embryo; the consequences of maternal smoking, especially metal exposure and the induced oxidative stress. Choosing the umbilical cord is justified because the blood vessels in it are the direct elongation of the vascular system of the developing embryo and umbilical cord is exposed to all the harmful substances in the fetal circulation.
