Description of the research topic:

Healthcare has been going through a paradigm shift in the 21st century. Due to the increased access to the internet, social media, global supply chains and advanced technologies, patients started to bring new kinds of data, information and insights to the doctor-patient meeting. This paradigm shift has been more impressive in consumerist societies. In the literature, this shift is called digital health and fundamentally it is a cultural transformation as it shapes the basic structure of practicing medicine. The role of physicians has been changing from being the keyholder to the ivory tower of medicine towards becoming a guide for their patients in the jungle of health information.

In medical futuristic studies, we aim to analyze the impact the use of these technologies has on the doctor-patient relationship; and predict future impacts to better prepare patients, physicians and policy makers.
Among advanced technologies such as wearable health sensors, portable diagnostics devices or virtual reality; artificial intelligence (AI) clearly stands out. Automation has a huge impact on repetitive and/or data-based medical tasks; and significantly changes the jobs of medical professionals as well as the delivery of healthcare.

Those AI-based medical technologies should be highlighted that influence the doctor-patient relationship. Thus, AI represents a second paradigm shift that is imminent in healthcare: while digital health brought patients to the same table where only medical professionals have been sitting for hundreds of years, this new shift adds one more member to the medical team, an AI entity.

Medical futuristic studies aim to analyze the advantages, risks and challenges of the current and the upcoming paradigm shifts.

Three medical specialties attract considerable attention when it comes to how automation will impact them: cardiology, oncology and radiology. Cardiology could pave the way for other specialties in terms of how its guidelines, evidence-based approach and practice should shape future doctor-patient meetings.

Scientific methods under the term foresight can help medical professionals, patients and policy makers alike to better prepare culturally for the changes coming from the use of such advanced technologies.
